Book Description
This text examines the sociological and physiological aspects of ageing and the manner in which they affect the nutritional needs of individuals. The coverage of the theories of ageing is updated, and so provides a sound basis for understanding the process of ageing as a natural one. New findings in geriatric nutrition are discussed, ensuring that students have a current basis for their studies. The chapter on food selection patterns discusses how ethnic, social and cultural patterns affect the likely response to dietary intervention, and provides students with a guide as to how to approach future clients in order to ensure the greatest likelihood of a successful interaction. The updated chapter on drugs and nutrition provides a background to drug-nutrient interactions and polypharmacy.

Book Description
The proportion of the population over 65 years of age is increasing steadily in most industrialized countries. In the United States the proportion of elderly people has risen from four percent in 1900 to 11 % in 1978, and is projected to be 14% by the year 2000. The occurrence of debilitating chronic diseases in the elderly increases with each additional year. These diseases, along with the natural loss of tissue function that occurs throughout adult life, impose a heavy burden on the health care system. Nutri tion plays an important etiologic role in many of these degenerative changes. Conse quently, the aging segment of the population presents a challenge to the nutrition scientist, who should be able to recommend optimal intakes of nutrients to minimize the functional losses associated with aging and to optimize the health of those already elderly. This sixth volume in the series Human Nutrition: A Comprehensive Treatise provides a conspectus of the various interactions of nutrition with the aging process and a comprehensive survey of current knowledge of the amounts of individual nutrients needed by the elderly. The volume begins with a general survey of the multifaceted relationship of nutrition to aging, followed by four chapters on how nutrition can affect age-related changes in selected body functions. The next six chapters cover the avail able evidence regarding the needs of the elderly for dietary energy, protein, calcium, trace elements, vitamins, and fiber.

Book Description
As the older adult population continues to grow, so will the prevalence and incidence of age-related disorders. In Handbook of Clinical Nutrition and Aging, Second Edition, the editors and contributors (a panel of recognized academic nutritionists, geriatricians, clinicians and scientists) have thoroughly updated and revised their widely acclaimed first edition with fresh perspectives and the latest scientific and clinical developments in age-associated disease. New chapters tackle ecological perspectives on adult eating behavior, and behavioral theories applied to nutritional therapies in aging, while topics such as Sarcopenia and Cachexia are discussed in greater detail. The authors outline the physiological basis for each disorder, provide the latest information about the interaction of nutrition with these conditions, and review the potential routes and mechanisms for clinical intervention. Timely and authoritative, Handbook of Clinical Nutrition and Aging, Second Edition is a unique, comprehensive resource and will prove a valuable guide to all nutritionists, physicians, nurses, dietitians, and speech-language and occupational therapists who provide care for the rapidly expanding aging population.

Book Description
In September 2016, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a workshop to examine trends and patterns in aging and factors related to healthy aging in the United States, with a focus on nutrition, and how nutrition can sustain and promote healthy aging, not just in late adulthood, but beginning in pregnancy and early childhood and extending throughout the lifespan. Participants discussed the role of nutrition in the aging process at various stages in life, changes in organ systems over the lifespan and changes that occur with age related to cognitive, brain, and mental health, and explored opportunities to move forward in promoting healthy aging in the United States. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Abstract: A primer for college students in nursing, medicine, health education, psychology, home economics, and allied health professions presents an introduction to the role of nutrition in the aging process. Topics include an overview of the biological theories of aging; a demographical profile of the US elderly population; nationalstatus of the aged; nutritional requirements of older people and the biocultural basis of geriatric nutrition; therelationship of nutrition to aging and disease; and society's programmatic response to nutrition problems of theelderly. A discussion of the likelihood of a national nutrition policy concerning aging and the elderly is also included. Information sources in geriatric nutrition and recommended daily dietary allowances are appended. (wz).

Book Description
The proportion of people of pensionable age in this country has been increasing steadily and now represents nearly one in five of the total population. the vast majority of the younger people in this group can look forward to many years of active and enjoyable life and several will remain fit into extreme old age. The right diet contributes to the maintenance of health and well-being and it is important that elderly people share in the increasig knowledge about how to maintain health through good nutrition. This report makes recommendations for maintaining good nutritional status in elderly people and should be of interest ot those giving advice to this age group.

Book Description
The first section in Volume 1 describes the fundamentals of nutrition and aging which include research strategies for the study of nutrition and aging. The nutritional modulation of the aging process which has provided a major breakthrough in the field of nutrition and longevity is also discussed. These include biomedical influences, and social and psychological aspects. Section 3 includes dietary characteristics of the elderly population and methods for the assessment of nutritional status. The nutritional status of the elderly with respect to individual nutrients as determined by dietary survey and by biochemical methods is described in Section 4. Section 4 also includes discussion on nutrient metabolism, requirements, nutritional imbalances, and deficiencies of nutrients. Energy metabolism and obesity as a factor in pathogenesis of diseases are also discussed.
