Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: History of Inernational Relations, grade: 1,0, University of Stuttgart, language: English, abstract: Is there a right or wrong way to remember such times and if so, how should postcolonial commemorative culture be realized? As the focus of this paper lies mainly on Germany it will therefore first give an overview of German postcolonialism as this is the current hot topic with the Humboldt Forum being in construction, then it takes a closer look at what the Humboldt forum exactly is and why it is so controversial. After that it gives an insight into how other countries deal with the issue of publicly remembering sensible subjects and it concludes with examples of how countries could possibly remember in a more sensible way and an outlook on the future of such institutions, the Humboldt Forum in particular. “To be in touch with as much of the world as possible" is what Wilhelm von Humboldt once said. This quotation is cited on the cover of the Humboldt Forum brochure advertising the new museum which is currently being built in Germany. Amongst other things it will later showcase art which was acquired during the postcolonial period. This is the reason, why with the museum and this quotation there comes a whole lot of controversy that reaches far over the borders of Germany. The core of the discussion is whether proudly displaying items which were obtained under difficult, sometimes even violent and nonconsensual conditions, can ever be a sign for “positive coexistence" and “encouraging curiosity and enthusiasm about unfamiliar realms". So, what the founders of such institutions intended visitors to remember while they are in the museum is the historical past of the countries from which the items were taken. But what should also be remembered, and not celebrated at all here, are the lootings and exploitations of the Europeans during postcolonial times which is more or less quietly being swept under the rug.

Book Description
The Berlin Palace in the heart of the German capital experienced a traumatic past: heavily bombed during World War II, the baroque-style royal residence was demolished several years later. Yet in a reversal of fortune, the building has since undergone reconstruction, and 2019 marks the date of its reopening as the home of the Humboldt Forum museum. Illustrated in full color and with contributions by Franco Stella, the architect behind the rebuilding, this volume offers the story of the resurrected palace. As the first comprehensive overview of the massive architectural undertaking, The Reconstruction of Berlin Palace offers an in-depth account by experts who were directly involved in the process. They discuss a range of topics, from the decorative sandstone in the façade to the artisanal techniques that enabled the reproduction. The new structure serves as an arresting focal point for the grand avenue Unter den Linden and is a monument both to the original palace and to the modern, vibrant city that has evolved around its replacement.

Book Description
The Values, World Society and Modelling Yearbook 2014 analyses contemporary world events, drawing on foundational ideas in various academic disciplines. The year 2014 was the centenary of the start of the First World War and the seventieth anniversary of the Normandy landings in the Second World War. The year saw violent conflict in Ukraine and the rise of the Islamic State in parts of Syria and Iraq. A referendum was held in Scotland to decide whether to stay in the UK. Centrist parties lost ground in the European Parliament elections and a general election was held in India, the biggest ever election in the world. Thomas Piketty sparked debate with his analysis of growing inequality in capitalist economies. Politicians in the UK talked about ‘British values’ and debated ‘is Britain Christian?’ The British Museum lent one of the Elgin Marbles to the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and Putin made overtures to China. In California, Elliot Rodger went on the rampage, killing six people. Malala Yousafzay won the Nobel Peace Prize, Maryam Mirzakhani won the Fields Medal and Judit Polgar retired from international chess. Germany won the World Cup in Brazil. Echoes of the Big Bang confirmed the theory of how the universe began. The 2014 Yearbook discusses these events alongside a variety of other specific events and general issues. In addition, this book includes the speech given by Kevin Avruch when he was joint recipient of the Conflict Research Society Book of the Year Prize 2014 for his book Context and Pretext in Conflict Resolution.

Book Description
32 high-res stereo-pairs for “crossed-eyes-viewing“ from the architecture of Berlin S3D Photography by Josef Plank & Siegfried Büker Introduction: „Not without reason, we have the ability to see stereo 3D (S3D). She made us better hunters, made us recognize predators earlier and escape from them. Why should not we use this heritage of hunter-gatherer times today at work, in leisure and entertainment, in short, wherever we visually experience the world?“ James Cameron, Director of “AVATAR” The playback possibilities of stereoscopic recordings (S3D-Content) have improved significantly due to developments in eBook software and display technologies in the 20th of the 21st century. With the standard ePub 3 and KF8 (Kindle Format 8) or also called azw3-Format, illustrated books can be published as electronic books in high quality. This is the first published application of a stereoscopic illustrated book, following research of the author. This version of "The architecture of Berlin in a stereoscopic view" is the version for "crossed-eyes-view". This viewing technique is explained below, along with other viewing techniques. The present version was designed in double page layout in DIN A4. On opening the double page, a DIN A3 image in landscape format is displayed, with the image for the right eye on the left side and the image for the left eye on the right side. The resolution of the images is adapted to the height of UHD displays with 2160p and the images are embedded as lossless .png files. This results in cinema quality in picture height of modern 4k digital cinema projectors. Due to the "book format" and the "crossed-eyes-viewing" the width is less than 4k, that is to say 2 x 1527 pixels = 3054 pixels. As color space, sRGB has been chosen so that the colors are reproduced more or less correctly even in consumer displays. The dynamic (contrast) should be more than 10 f-stops ≙ 2 to the 10th or more than 1:1000), if the display used, can meet this relatively simple requirement. These parameters leave the classic printed illustrated book behind. The quoted values call for a publication as an eBook.

Book Description
How can we rethink anthropology beyond itself? In this book, twenty-one artists, anthropologists, and curators grapple with how anthropology has been formulated, thought, and practised ‘elsewhere’ and ‘otherwise’. They do so by unfolding ethnographic case studies from Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Poland – and through conversations that expand these geographies and genealogies of contemporary exhibition-making. This collection considers where and how anthropology is troubled, mobilised, and rendered meaningful. Across Anthropology charts new ground by analysing the convergences of museums, curatorial practice, and Europe’s reckoning with its colonial legacies. Situated amid resurgent debates on nationalism and identity politics, this book addresses scholars and practitioners in fields spanning the arts, social sciences, humanities, and curatorial studies. Preface by Arjun Appadurai.
